1992 : Begat Theater Company was formed in May 1992 in New York in order to present an original play, SAM, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.Sixteen Americans and one French artist had united around the life and works of Samuel Beckett. "Begat," a word frequently used by Beckett meaning "to engender, to create," was chosen as the name of the company. In Scotland, the play was heralded as "one of the most bizarre shows on the Fringe. Also one of the most endearing....an irreverent but not irrelevant tribute to the now dead Dublin playwright."

1993 : Begat Theater in France
In 1993 the company moved to Europe, led by the artistic director, Karin Holmström, an architect and stage designer, and Philippe Laliard, the technical director. From this moment on, the members of the company came from both countries and the company developed and performed its shows on both continents. Creation : Le Clown-Soldat on tour in France and Italy.

1994 : First street theater show
The company created L'Equilibre, a show inspired by Victor Hugo's The Man who Laughs and Fellini's La Strada. This show was developed and performed in New York with the original members of the company before it was brought to Europe for a tour in France (Les Arts dans la Rue, Morlaix, Festival Eclat, Aurillac, Festival de la Marionnette, Mirepoix, among others) and Poland (Malta Festival, Poznan).
